OECD 432: In vitro phototoxicity (Balb/c 3T3)

In vitro phototoxicity can identify substances that are likely to be phototoxic in vivo, following topical or systemic application to the skin. The in vitro phototoxicity test evaluates the photocytotoxic potential of a chemical by comparing its cytotoxicity when tested in the presence and in the absence of light.

The test evaluates photo-cytotoxicity by the relative reduction in viability of cells, measured quantitatively using the neutral red uptake (NRU) assay in the presence versus absence of UV-A.
